Activated in December 1941, the squadron fought in the Pacific during World War II, flying F4F Wildcats and F4U Corsairs. Over the years, it transitioned through aircraft like the F-8 Crusader and the F/A-18 Hornet, reflecting its adaptability.
VMFA-251 has participated in numerous conflicts, including the Korean War, Desert Storm, and the Global War on Terror. Flying the F/A-18C Hornet, they provide critical close air support, air superiority, and precision strike capabilities.
VMFA-251 was deactivated on April 23, 2020, at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Beaufort, South Carolina. The squadron was relocated to MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, to transition to the F-35C Lightning II aircraft.
